Flow Assurance
The Flow Assurance department provides services from conceptual studies and feasibility analysis to basic and detailed engineering in STAT MARINE offices on top of technical assistance worldwide. Those computerised analyses performed in-house are completed by a large site practice for equipment test, commissioning as well as field assistance for start-up, test, and dedicated operations.
The Flow Assurance engineers have developed theoretical knowledge and associated operating practice following their engineer degree acquired among the domains of fluid thermodynamics, single / multi-phase flow, thermal modelling including CFD, hydrocarbons processing.
-
Field architecture screening
Our engineers make our clients to benefit from multi-discipline expertise oriented on shallow and deep offshore oil and gas production.
Field layout: Field general arrangement can be defined optimizing not only pipe routing but integrating thermal, hydraulic and operating constraints.
Production network concept: Offshore concepts such as flow line and riser technologies are well known by our engineers allowing them for a cross-discipline comparison including design, installation, operation and inspection / maintenance.
-
Thermal design and equipment performance tests
Our thermal experience allows our engineer to design insulation, select remediation or demonstrate the subsea production systems and the flow lines / risers meets their thermal requirements.
Concept thermal performance: STAT MARINE is able to recommend offshore concept and associated thermal performance in line with client operating strategy during screening or conceptual studies.
Thermal design: Our thermal expertise allows the Flow Assurance engineers to select the relevant production and shut down scenario for basic / detailed engineering to develop project specification as well as to perform the corresponding thermal design analyses.
Thermal tests: Our engineers have gathered a large experience in testing what improve our client confidence level in the thermal test results of subsea production equipment pilot as well as in situ production systems, prior or after production start-up.
Complex thermal analyses: Additionally, our engineers are particularly skilled to model and analyse complex thermal phenomenon under various FEA / CFD software.

Multiphase flow management
On top of gas / liquid single phase flow analyses, STAT Marine engineers are familiar with the definition of multiphase production flow limits in terms of turndown minimum flow for stability, thermal criteria, deposits, and in terms of maximum flow related to available network pressure drop and erosion limits, as a function of phases distribution and fluid properties.
Flow regime: STAT MARINE engineers commonly run flow analyses for steady state production conditions as well as transient operations such as production start-up, permanent instabilities, depressurisation, pigging,… as well as shut down conditions.
Operating margin: Our engineers can also quantify thermal risks such as wax, hydrates,…, in deviating from design production conditions or degrading the insulation performance level.
The surge pressure occurring in some transient operations of single phase liquid filled system can be evaluated by our workforces for simple injection / offloading lines or even complex networks.
Moreover, our engineers are familiar with the topside pumping equipment and relief device impact on the water hammer phenomenon as well as revision of ESD logic to reduce the surge wave magnitude.

Operating philosophy / procedures
Strategy: STAT MARINE engineers are used to work close to operations and gather practical feedback that allow developing a range of operating strategies such as pigging or thermal management philosophies, and could also participate to the definition of dedicated specification such as for hydrate remediation tool, and associated operating philosophy.
Procedure: Our engineers are familiar with operating procedures; they are particularly able to develop or to review nominal or back-up preservation operations, or even to propose hydrate localisation and remediation logical principles and operating level procedures.
Operations: Finally, our Flow Assurance personnel offer site assistance for dedicated operations such as thermal signature test making their expertise in thermal and hydraulic aspects all the more useful to our clients.
Our engineers share their expertise during subsea training sessions to candidates such as operators, in particular in thermodynamics, thermal aspects and hydraulic to address challenges of deep offshore production through the various flow assurance issues from dedicated chemistry theory to preservation operations.
On top of in-house thermal and hydraulic spreadsheets, our Flow Assurance personnel is used to the following key simulation software and can adapt to other market computerized tools:
- OLGA from SPT Group (and associated PVTsim from Calsep),
- PIPENET from Sunrise,
- PIPESIM from Schlumberger,
- Aspen HYSYS from Aspentech,
- FLUENT from ANSYS.
